Concours Week and the Historic Races
It's that time of year again on the Monterey Peninsula, the time when car fans around the world converge on Carmel, Pebble Beach and Monterey to experience Car Week. There are events happening pretty much every day of the week, some of which are free to attend. A few of the top events are Carmel's Concours on the Avenue, McCall's Motorworks Revival event at the airport, auctions from Bonham's, Mecum, RM, and Russo and Steele, The Quail event, Concorso Italiano, and many others. The headline events are the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance on Sunday and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Thursday through Sunday.
I have two insider tips for my favorite events: the Pre-Reunion Races and the Porsche Werks Reunion. The Pre-Reunion races are the weekend before the historic races and have almost all of the vehicles with nearly none of the crowd. It is a chance for new racers to gain experience and repeat racers to get more track time. Since it is much more relaxed than the race weekend, owners and drivers tend to be very open and available to talk about their cars and let you look inside them. Tickets are only $25 a day and parking is easier than on the race weekend. The Porsche Werks Reunion is put on by the Porsche Club of America. This is the second year of the event. It is held at Rancho Canada Golf Club on Carmel Valley Road and features hundreds of Porsches on display. The event and parking are both free.
